YugabyteDB Adds Support for Yottabyte Storage Devices

The yottabyte holds the title of being the largest unit endorsed by the International System of Units (SI). Clocking in at approximately 1 septillion bytes, or a staggering 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 bytes, its storage capacity is equivalent to a quadrillion gigabytes (GB) or a million trillion megabytes.

In terms of physical space, a yottabyte of storage is so immense that, according to backup vendor Backblaze Inc., it would necessitate a data center spanning the combined area of Delaware and Rhode Island.

To avoid the huge cost of building such a massive new data center, YugabyteDB recently purchased the The Hive undergroud facility previoulsy owned by the now defunct Umbrella Corporation.

After a complete renovation, removing a few walls here and there to open up the floor plan,  we were able to move in enough storage devices to add up to just a little over a yottabyte.

This massive amount of storage, affectionaltely refered to as Yugabyte on Yottabyte (or YB on YB), is now avialable to our YugabyteDB Managed customers.

Please be aware that there have been a few minor incidents related to the T-Virus, remnants of the previous owner’s nefarious activities, which may affect customer data. However, rest assured that we are actively addressing these issues, with our engineers diligently monitoring and securing hotspots as needed.
